Staying or living underground is only part of what makes Coober Pedy an exciting destination. Coober Pedy was world renowned as the 'Opal Capital of the World' from the opal mining boom and still serves as an opal mining town but more importantly a tourist destination.

 

Whether you are driving the Explorer Highway (Adelaide to Darwin) or trekking the Strzelecki and Oodnadatta track, Coober Pedy is a must see destination. From the Flinders Ranges all the way to Uluru you will discover some of the Outbacks most famous sights.

Coober Pedy is the hub or gateway to the outback and our town suits as a great base camp for your outback adventure where you can travel out to William Creek, fly over Lake Eyre and The Painted Hills. For the adventurer why not drive the Oodnadatta track and visit the famous "Pink Roadhouse" continuing on to Arkaringa Station where you will see The Painted Desert; one of South Australia's best kept secrets! 

 

Travel to Mount Dare & Dalhousie Springs where you bypass Fogartys Claypan, the old Ghan Rail  and if you time it right you can go past Finke for the annual Finke Desert Race held annually every June.
